Kite Surfing
Kite surfing at Dungeness Spit near Sequim, Washington, offers a thrilling experience in a remote, scenic setting. This five-mile-long sand spit juts into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, creating dynamic wind and water conditions ideal for experienced riders. Consistent spring and summer winds, combined with minimal crowds, make it a great spot for freestyle or downwind rides.
The area’s natural beauty is a major draw, with views of the Olympic Mountains, abundant birdlife, and occasional marine wildlife like seals. However, the shifting tides and gusty winds can be challenging, requiring good technical skill and self-sufficiency.

New Dungeness Lighthouse
The New Dungeness Lighthouse holds a special place in American lighthouse history. It was the first lighthouse constructed in the Puget Sound region, playing a vital role in the development of Pacific Northwest trade and settlement. Originally 100 feet tall, the tower was reduced to 63 feet in 1927 due to structural issues, yet it still stands proud, its light shining 24 hours a day. Managed today by the New Dungeness Light Station Association (NDLSA), the lighthouse is a testament to both historic preservation and civic dedication.
The hike to the lighthouse is a moderate challenge, subject to tides and weather conditions, and offers a wonderful opportunity for bird watching, photography, and wildlife encounters. The Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses the spit, is home to over 250 species of birds as well as harbor seals and other marine wildlife.
